Call me a cog

Once again, I'm a cog in the machine. A cog that's been repositioned to grease the machine operations better.

5 re-orgs in 5 years. Experience tells me to be professional. To deliver on my new job. To do what I need to do to draw the salary. To come in, shut up, and do the tasks assigned to me.

But it's so tiring. My new boss isn't exactly the nice sort, and if I had had a choice, I definitely wouldn't have joined the department to work for her.

No point complaining I suppose. Nothing has ever made anything change. Nothing ever will.

Why I hate being a SWC rep

For those of you who know me, you would know that I am most easy with my monies and the price of a gift is of no concern to me (barring astromical figures) if I have the heart to get it in the first place.

I have had a sudden epiphany why I dislike, in fact hate!, being a SWC rep so much. Of course, the tedium of remembering details and being thoughtful are not my strengths to begin with (I don't even remember my best friends' bd in time most of the time!) but beyond that, it is the entire hypocrisy of the job that I hate it.

I hate it when I have to gather everyone to celebrate everyone's birthday simply because it's the 'right' thing to do.

I hate it when I have to organise events / outings / meals because it is the 'right' thing to do.

I hate it when this morning I bought a fruit basket to welcome a colleague back to work and have 1 Head to email me to put in place SOPs and my boss asking to speak to me about it. My colleague's boss thought that it would be a nice gesture to send her a small fruit basket to welcome her back  as this colleague had been feeling under the weather for quite some time despite reporting for work everyday. She was diagnosed with near bronchitis end of last week and was told that it could potentially develop into pneumonia if she did take care. Despite this, she faithfully reported for work today because she had to conduct a workshop this afternoon. I ordered a small fruit basket of sixty-eight freaking dollars to be shared amongst 15 people to welcome her back and now my boss wants to talk to me about detailing SOPs on the use of the blooooddddy funds which nobody asked me to detail an SOP when I used it to buy CNY goodies for all the DDs who we do not even work closely with!

The hypocrisy of people! Does not a colleague who ran her health to the ground for the unit's work deserve more than the stupid people out there who most of the times make our own lives more difficult rather than easier for us?

This is the reason why I HATE being a staff welfare rep. For truth be told, no one gives a shit about staff's welfare. Some people just cares about doing the 'right' thing for the 'right' people at the 'right' time to be seen by 'right' others.

Ka-pui!

What to say?

I tried twice to write something and stopped, then deleted everything I wrote.

The first attempt was "Taking time off for myself" and I thought I could write about how I spent lunch hour by myself, walking around the shopping centre and thinking about things.

The second attempt was "Things I learnt at lunch" where I tried to write a few observations and some insights I gained from my walk.

Both times I stopped because what I had to say wasn't interesting. It wasn't insightful in any way to say the least. So rather than write something no one would read, I deleted it. My insights were things like "Business is risky". Which other than being a truism, would have to be religiously profound for anyone to want to read further.

So I suppose I can really learn something from this.

I have nothing interesting to say.

My life doesn't involve flying around, meeting interesting people or doing exciting things. I work in a cubicle from 9 to 6pm, writing emails, and coordinating meetings. My personal life consists of my family, which I do not want to share in this space.

So what can I possibly write about?

A Most Frustrating Experience

Dear Andrew,

I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with your store’s services with regards to delivery of products and installation.

On 15 Dec 08, we placed an order with Velson Tee for a Sharp LCD TV and a Fisher & Paykel fridge. We arranged for the items to be delivered on 10 Jan 09 and for the wall mounting of the TV to be done on 13 Jan 09. The dates were clearly stated on the receipt and advised by Velson in terms of the schedule.

Both my husband and I arranged all our schedules to accommodate the delivery and installation of the items. I am sure you can appreciate the trouble involved.

Imagine our surprise when only one of the items arrived on 10 Jan 09. In addition, the free home theatre system that was supposed to come with the TV was left out. My husband had to ring your company and speak with various people before we could confirm a new schedule of the delivery of the fridge to be done only on 12 Jan 09.

I applied for leave for 13 Jan 09 to be at home for the wall installation of the TV. I waited the entire day till 1500hr before I rang your company to check on the timing. Imagine my frustration when I was told on the phone that the wall installation could not be done because the workers’ schedule was tight and they were overbooked! And all this while, I did not receive any notification whatsoever.

I cannot understand how it is that I booked my slot almost an entire month ahead and yet the schedule could not accommodate me. What is also most frustrating and upsetting is the fact that we had to find out all about the non-delivery by ourselves without anyone informing us. To make matters worse, your staff made no effort whatsoever to help coordinate things so that the delivery of the home theatre system could be done at the same time as the mounting of the TV system.

Your staff sought my understanding that the installation of the TV is not done by your workers whereas the delivery is and therefore arrangements could not be made for the items to be done at the same time. However, your staff seemed to have failed to understand that I was being forced to bear the consequences of actions that were through no fault of mine. Not only was my time wasted, my personal life was also affected such as the fact that my baby boy could not come home as there was no fridge to store his food.

I would think that a company as well-established as yours should have in place better processes to ensure customer satisfaction. While I understand things do sometimes go wrong, I was most upset by your staff’s natural assumption that I should just arrange my schedule to fit the new arrangements. Throughout the entire encounter, not a single solution was offered to me beyond ‘we will reschedule for you’. It was only upon numerous phone calls back and forth and my insistence that your staff finally arranged for the TV to be temporarily set up on a desk rack while we wait for the wall installation of the TV to be done the next day.

I would like an explanation from your company on how the time I wasted and the emotional upheaval I experienced could be compensated.

I will appreciate a receipt of this email.

A most upset and frustrated customer,
Mrs. xxx

Grouses on my retreat

1. It's a working meeting, not a retreat.
2. We spent 10 freaking minutes arguing whether we should keep soft copies or hard copies of filenotes.
3. Lunch was catered for 10 pax when we had 16 people because we have no monies.
4. I get to earn credit cards points because I had to sign for the room charges on my cc as the organiser was called back to HQ for a meeting.
5. And if you are wondering where all these were taking place, it's in freaking ulu Kranji Resort.

Back in my school, my boss would have slaughtered me for planning a retreat like this.

Sigh. And this is HQ no less.

Bared Fangs

My friends know that for all my tough demeanour, I am actually a pretty harmless and non-confrontational person. Compared to Phoenix who would give the ah-beng salesmen at Lucky Plaza her toughest 'you-don't-think-you-are-chao-ah-beng-therefore-you-can-take-advantage-of-me' tirade, I am honestly a rather mild and harmony-preserving person at heart.

But I have my fangs too.

I especially hate it when people mistake my kindness for weakness. Doppy has been at the receiving end of my temper a number of times when he mistook my love for him as my weakness and took advantage of it (albeit he claims, most unknowingly).

And so it was with this particular housing agent of mine.

If you are not aware yet, we have been putting up our flat for sale since mid-late September. The housing agent in question was recommended by one of doppy's friends and thus we kinda trusted him implicitly.

His first showing was pretty good. He arranged for a total of 6 viewings a day and we were kinda hopeful that someone would make us an offer. However, the week went by with nary a sound. Subsequently, there were also hardly anyone who seemed keen on our place.

Then came the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the entire world is talking about economic crisis and an impending recession. Construction work in Singapore has slowed down, there are talks of cutting cost by cutting head counts, jobs are lost, and overnight, there are people who are gathering at Hong Lim Speakers' Corner to see if they have a case against DBS bank for mis-selling them structured products that they did not understand or did not suit their risk profiles. (This para is to update our overseas readers on the situation this tiny red dot.)

And it was against this background that doppy and I began to fear that if we do not sell our flat before December, we would need to revalue our flat and the valuation would most probably go down. Since we were not really greedy to begin with, we decided that it would be prudent for us to lower our asking price as it was quite obvious that the market belonged to the buyers.

And the moment we told our agent that we were willing to lower our asking price, he miraculously got an offer. To make matters worse, this person who was making us an offer was someone who we did not lay eyes upon for that day when the viewing took place, we were out and only F was at home. The agent offered us a price that was $2k below what we were prepared to accept and he kept harassing doppy for a firm answer. I am talking about 10min apart phone calls to try to hard-sell us the deal. I was a little reluctant to close the deal so quickly cos I reasoned with doppy that his commission was twice my monthly salary and I put up with much more shit at work and do a hell out more to earn my monies than merely showing people a flat. I felt that he ought to have done more to get us the price we want especially since we were not really being unreasonable about it. Being my usual cynical and doubting self, I also wondered aloud to doppy whether he was manipulating us and playing on our fears to make us drop our asking price before showing our place to genuine buyers. This feeling was further reinforced when I found out from F that the buyer did not come with an agent and was instead a direct buyer. This meant that our agent would not only earn commission from the us for the sale of our place but also from the buyer. Obviously, this would also indicate a conflict of interest as he would be representing both the buyer and the seller. But I chose to give him the benefit of a doubt and said that as long as he got us the price we want for our place, we would go ahead with the deal. So after much ding-ding-dong-dongs, the deal was finally closed at the price we wanted.

He rushed us to sign the option to purchase and honestly, it was only upon hindsight that we realised we should have smelt something fishy as the interested buyer only put down a $200 deposit. However at that time, he told us that it was pretty much a done deal as the buyer would have no problem obtaining a loan.

All that took place over the weekend and doppy and I were glad that we got the entire flat business off our mind. Though some of our friends commented that they thought we had let go of our flat a little too easily, doppy and I were of the mindset that we would not be able to predict how the market would go in the next couple of months and we did not want to take the risk and worry over the sale for a few more months. So we were happy with the deal we made and thought that was the end of the matter.

Come Tuesday, the agent informed doppy that he was showing our flat to buyers still. And that was when the story spilled. Apparently the buyer would not be able to afford a bank loan if her application for a HDB loan was rejected. She was buying under the single's scheme and the income cap for a HDB loan (since it is offered at a lower interest rate than bank loans) was $3k. Her gross salary was $3,250 and it would be difficult for her to obtain a HDB loan. A bank loan would require her to come up with 5% cash and combined with the cash value that we were asking above our valuation, she would have to fork out about 10% cash of the sale price. And this 10% cash was money that she did not have.

I was really unhappy when I heard the news. This was especially so since we signed the option to purchase which technically gave the buyer 2 weeks to sort out her financial matters and all but which meant that technically for 2 weeks, we were contractually and legally bound to not put our place up for sale till the option to purchase ran its course and it was not exercised. To compound matters, our agent wanted us to sign an exclusive rights with him when he brought us the papers to sign cos he said that since the deal was done, signing the exclusive with him was merely to help him maintain a good record which his company was fussy about. By this time, my aunt also told me that she knew an agent who charged only a 1% commission compared to the 2% that my agent charges. Needless to say, I was a most unhappy client.

The straw that broke the camel's back came when our agent informed us that the buyer was intending to forfeit the $200 deposit as she did not think that she could truly afford the place. I was truly riled by then and my unhappiness had developed into a sense of anger and frustration. Unfortunately for the agent, he chose to ring doppy to explain the situation when I was with him taking our dinner at the hawker centre. He then had the gall to ask doppy if we could lower our asking price further cos he might just be able to get us an offer if we do.

I took over the phone and really gave him a piece of my mind. I stated uncategorically that I was not happy with his service and told him that I could not help but felt that we were manipulated in this entire transaction. I told him that I was not happy with the way he only provided information to us on a need-to-know basis and with every new development, it appeared that he was only looking out for his own interest and not ours. Then he started to give me stories of how he was also not aware of all the information and he had already kept us in the loop at the earliest available moment. I was major pissed with him and told him that I did not care for his stories since they were now all water under the bridge.

After a most stern diatribe from me, I told him that I would lay my cards straight with him. 1. I would only lower my asking price if he would cut his commission. 2. I would not give exclusive rights to him as I could not trust him. 3. I want to see the option to purchase torn up in front of me. 4. I fully intend to go to other agents to get them to sell my place.

After much bargaining to no avail with me, he finally gave in and was willing to take a lower commission in return for a lower selling price for the 2nd intended buyer. 5 minutes later he rang back to say that the buyer had not enough monies and was merely asking for the price for fun. You can imagine how tired and upset I was by then and I was totally cold towards him. After a feeble attempt at convincing me that he was still confident about selling our place and asking us to reconsider giving him exclusive rights, He dared not have a sustained conversation with me and hung up at the first opportunity he had.

Apparently my talking-to to him had an effect. This weekend, he managed to get another 4 - 5 viewings set up. And today, apparently one of the interested parties is coming back for a second viewing.

I hope that something could come out of this.

Sigh.

Poor guy

http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_284682.html

So another army NSF boy has died. That makes 4 this year. Guess he served but he didn't get a chance to fsck off. Poor guy.

Wonder if he was forced to do the chin-ups despite his MC? Wonder if his commander said that he is fit to do arm training since all he had was a hamstring injury? Wonder if he would have lived if SAF had called the SCDF ambulance right away rather than let their medic and MO attend to him first?

It was proposed earlier this year after the 3 deaths, that every NS boy going into the SAF should be subjected to further heart and respiratory checkups that would have cost a few hundred dollars per person. This proposal was turned down probably because of the total costs that would be incurred. Why not offer to let the parents pay using medisave? At what cost a life?

Now the boy's parents have lost a son. And as a recent father, I cannot imagine how much pain and anguish they are going through. He was supposed to go to university after his NS, having scored well in his polytechnic.

Isolated incident? Is it really just an isolated incident? Or is it a reflection of the true negligence to life and welfare that goes 0n in the SAF?

Ours is not a regular mercenary army. It is a conscript army. The boys are given no choice but to serve. They are not paid properly. They are not treated with respect. In my entire 30 years of my life, never have I seen someone treat another person with so little respect as in the SAF army.

Risk your life to defend a nation that doesn't even value you. Poor guy.

"Tell me again why we decided to have a baby?" - the mother's story

And so, doppy has given all a pretty accurate and humorous recount of our nights. His account however was in broad strokes and written in general terms. I shall now give you my version of last night.

It started well with our confinement lady helping us to put him to bed at about 10pm (right after doppy was done blogging the previous post in bed). His diaper was a new one (mental note to self: change diaper before the second feed in the night so that he would not vomit out the milk due to the movement) and he was full. He was fast asleep and if we keep our fingers crossed, he would be able to sleep till 12 plus 1am (he feeds every 3 hours if he drinks 90ml of formula milk per feed).

So it was to bed we went with some hushed hushed whispers of 'he's very cute hor?' and 'meowme, I love you' and 'I love you too'. I was just drifting off to sleep when suddenly .....!

Both father and son woke up simultaneously, one with an expletive and one with a whimper.

The big baby woke up with a nose bleed, and the small one needed his mid-night feed.

So the mum tried to sit up as quickly as I could but with the weak (or perhaps non-existent!) abdominal muscles from the C-section (oh! I have never realised that one needs those muscles to sit up!), I was unable to do so quickly and instead had to turn to my side and slowly pushed myself up.

By the time I got to the cot, the big baby had already ran to the toilet to prevent his nose blood from staining the bed and I could not depend on the father to soothe the baby. So I patted the baby, whispered words of lies such as 'mummy has milk. mummy will give you milk in a second' and proceeded in my groggy state to make a bottle of formula milk for him.

When I was feeding the bottle to the babe, the big baby had come back to bed. He apologised profusely for not being able to help but he needed to lie down as he was feeling faint. In between trying to get the little one to drink his milk and not vomit it out, I was trying to advise the big one to put his head between his legs to prevent more nose bleeding.

When I was finally done with feeding and burping the little one, I went to make some cooling tea for the big baby. After he had drunk it, he promptly went back to sleep. I then lay down to try to steal a few moments of shut-eye.

It seemed like just seconds when the small one whimpered again. So up again, I got up, checked the clock and it was only 2am. That was too early for his feed and so I checked his diaper and indeed they were full from his urine. So I changed his diaper for him, placed him on my bed, anticipating the next feed at 3am when I shall attempt to breastfeed him lying down.

And so it was with me lying semi-conscious next to the little one, humming the one and only lullaby I know while he fidgeted once a in a while. Promptly at 3am, he started whimpering again. I thought I could cheat him into suckling at my breast so that I would not need to get out of bed to make him his milk. Alas, my ploy did not work. His whimpering did not stop and he kept pushing my nipple out of his mouth with his tongue. To prevent his whimper from becoming a full blown wail and wake his dad who needs to wake up the next morning to go to work, I succumbed and got up to make him a bottle of milk.

After feeding him and burping him (did doppy mentioned in the previous post that it was a repetitive cycle??!!), I thought he was ready to go sleep. And so I placed him in his cot, hummed the lullaby (again!) and patted him to sleep. However by the time I was done with putting him in his bed, an hour and a half had passed from the beginning of his feed and because he had regurgitated some out, he was hungry again!

And so it was back to the milk table I went, made another bottle of milk and fed it to him again. While he was feeding, I sensed or rather heard him pooping again! But because he had yet to finish his feed, I had no choice but let him sit in his shit-soaked diaper to finish his milk. Immediately after he finished his milk, I changed his diaper. He pooped so much that he even soiled his pants and his lower back. So that took another 20min of cleaning up and wearing of pants and it was then I realised that his shirt needed changing too because he had soiled them with his vomit. And so I changed him and by this time, it was 4.30am. I placed him in his cot again went to the living room to express my milk (yes, I still need to keep to my expressing schedule). By the time I went back to my bed, it was 5.15am. He was fidgeting in his cot as he had not enter into deep sleep. He started whimpering again and I had to pick him up again to rock him to sleep. By this time, the little bird residing in the air-con compressor outside our bedroom knew the lullaby I was humming and started whistling the same tune! I kid you not! Initially I thought it was doppy who was whistling but since he was snoring, it could not be him. I swore that the bird was whistling the very same lullaby I was humming to xp!

By the time he finally allowed me to put him to sleep, it was 6am. And yes, you guessed it! He was hungry again because the last time he fed was over 2 hours ago! By this time, he was beginning to wail as he was frustrated from the lack of sleep and hunger. Dawn was breaking and mindful of him waking doppy up, I took him outside. Thankfully, by this time, both our confinement lady and help were awake. They both laughed at my pathetic state and took over the care of xp immediately. My confinement lady ushered me back to bed immediately and I needed no further encouragement.

And so it was at 6.30am that I finally collapsed into my bed and feel into a deep sleep. I slept so soundly, I did not even realise that doppy had woken up and gone to work. I had to sms him to ask if he kissed me goodbye for I had no recollection whatsoever!

Remind me again why we decided to have a baby?

Because in the rare moment when he gives me a most satisfied grin as he is drifting off to sleep, I feel an overwhelming sense of love for him and immense satisfaction and pride that I have managed to see to his needs.

And of course, whenever I look at him, I see a mini-doppy, and he is the proof that we both love each other and he is that product of our love.

That is why we have decided to have a baby.

"Tell me again why we decided to have a baby?"

No, don't be alarmed, neither of us are feeling suicidal or murderous. :)

It's just that, when you're desperately trying to get XP to calm down at 3.30am in the morning so that he will stop crying, so that he will feed, so that he won't be hungry, which is why he was crying in the first place, it can get to you. I asked this question to Lovebell last night and she replied, "Because we love each other" or something to that effect. I was delirious from lack of sleep then and might have misunderstood her. :P

Lovebell and I have only been looking after XP in our bedroom for the last three nights, and it has been challenging, to say the least. On the first night, we made many mistakes and Lovebell ended up changing his clothes three times within the night. On the second night, we learnt from those mistakes, and we ended up having a pretty "steady" night until 3.30am.

The thing about XP is his impatience. When he is hungry, he will start crying. And if he does not get any food within 5 minutes, he will start yelling. And when he is yelling, he will not feed. AND so because he is still hungry, he will continue yelling. And no amount of shoving the milk bottle in his mouth will get him to suck, because he is not yet sentient and can only react to stimuli.

The only way to stop his crying and get him to feed is to first calm him down. But no matter how we hold him, how we hug him, how we pat his bum, or sayang him, he will not stop yelling. Only in the arms of our confinement nanny will he stop. And it's not even like she holds him any differently, I think it's just a matter of chubby arms (or maybe confidence).

To cut a long story short, Lovebell and I tried to calm him down last night for 45 minutes to no avail, in the end, Lovebell succumbed and went to ask our nanny to help. Within 3 minutes of her holding him, he stopped yelling.

Sigh.

If you're wondering what his nightly schedule is like, here's a short summary.

As I write, the cycle is starting. He has started crying (not yelling, thank heavens) and the feed is beginning.

9.30pm - Feed
9.40pm - Mid-feeding burp
9.50pm - resume feed
10.00pm - Finish feed burp (IF NOTHING HAPPENS IN BETWEEN, like pooping or crying from uncomfortable gas)
10.15pm - Sayang for bedtime
10.30pm (if we're lucky) - Falls asleep

Depending on whether he poops or pukes, that will shorten the amount of time in between feeding as it reduces the milk in his belly.

If nothing happens, cycle starts again at about 12 midnight.
Finish cycle at 1am

New cycle at about 3am till 4am. This is usually also the time when his diaper will be soaked through and/or he's pooped so he needs changing. Oh, and when you change his diaper, the movement will cause him to cry, thereby interrupting the feed, and since he is still hungry, esp. if the movement causes him to puke up some milk. This is where we ran into trouble last night. He refused to go back to drinking after we were slow to burp him and caused him to cry from the gas problems.

After all that, at around 4am, he won't go back to sleep cos he's been asleep the last 8 hours, if you include his feeding time, cos he's half asleep when he sucks.

*Yawn*

Anyway, Lovebell was incredibly smart to start this on the Friday night of a long weekend so that I may have some time to recover in between. Hopefully, tonight we will survive this and that our love for XP (AND EACH OTHER) will continue to help us get through this.

Really, all that keeps us going is our love for XP, our love for one another, and pure adrenaline.

SO dear friends, please stand by us for the next 2 months ok? Donations of Illy coffee powder always appreciated. :P

No relevant experience, no relevant education

Spent Saturday night looking at the classifieds and recruit pages. Flipped through the whole stack and I couldn't even find a job that I was suitable for.

No legal degree, no finance background, no sales experience, no biz devt experience. No HR, no accounting, no marketing, no operations background, no project management certificate.

Nothing at all.

The 5 years I've spent in the frigging sewer service counts for nothing.

My engineering degree is useless since I don't remember anything.

Sigh.

A new year

I came into the office this morning thinking it was a new year, it could be a fresh start, a new breath of air. Then the worst happened at the meeting this morning and basically it boils down to this - all the stuff we have worked on for the last 6 months is pretty much wasted. My boss refused to fight for the project we had been working on, so I've been tasked to re-orient the paper to seek management's approval NOT to do anything. My miniboss thinks I'm useless in refusing to fight the boss, but I see no point in trying to push a proposal upwards when my own dept boss no longer stands behind it.

Sigh.....I'm so tired of all of this pointless non-work and the attitudes of the people I work for.

Hopefully 2008 is the year I'll get a new job. If not, pls let this year be over as quickly as 2007 went by. Please.
